Internship Length
Many of our interns are at our site for an entire academic year. Our placement requires a minimum of 8 months. Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy and 2nd year Social Work Interns typically do 8 month to 12 month rotation developing skills in providing therapy. First Year Social Work Interns learn the art of matching prospective clients with therapists during phone calls as well as developing therapy skills through the assignment of 1-2 clients.
Mandatory Meetings
Most mandatory meetings for interns are held between 10am and 3pm on Thursdays. These include:
- Staff Meeting, Peer Consultations & Staff Support Meetings
- Practice Manager Office Hours
- Weekly meetings with the Clinical Director for additional supervision
- Annual Trainings
Required Availability
Interns must be available for internship on the days their supervisor and office space is available (supervisor schedule below).
Interns are required to co-lead/assist in our Brave Voices Group that runs every second Sunday of the month. Availability is required from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm in our Scotch Plains location. (This includes 30 minutes before the group, the 3 hour group, and 30 minutes after the group).
Due to the nature of working with children and families, interns must be available until about 7 pm on days they are working in office. (Exceptions may be if class conflicts with one of those days.)
Blogging
Interns are required to complete 2-3 blogs during the course of their internship. Blogging is a great way to deepen your understanding of the material you are learning or working with. Being able to present your knowledge in a digestible format for an identified audience is an important skill. It will allow you to decrease mental health stigma, increase public knowledge and share your passions with others. Interns are coached through writing blogs and encouraged to consider a series of blogs where they can go deep into a particular subject of interest. Read previous intern blogs below.

Previous Intern Testimonials
Dr. Fawn McNeil-Haber is unflinchingly dedicated to fostering a work culture of cooperation, mutual support, mutual growth, and professionalism. I have been given ample opportunities to learn and develop personally and professionally through individual and practice-wide trainings, ever-available mentorship, and peer supervision. In my time here I have gained experience of immeasurable value that I am positive will prove useful for the rest of my career, though at this point I cannot foresee leaving this practice anytime soon. This is an excellent practice at which to begin or elevate a career as a psychotherapist.
Linda Farag, LSW (Former Rutgers MSW 2nd Year Intern)
When offered the opportunity to intern at Brave Minds, I was beyond excited. It is a great feeling starting your internship, but it comes with a lot of nerves. When choosing your internship location you want to make sure you’ll be able to meet school requirements, and that you have a knowledgeable supervisor who will aid in your learning. Within a week of interning with Brave Minds, I knew that I was in good hands as a student, and future therapist. Brave Minds has an incredible community of therapists and team members that welcome you in, offering insight and tips to embark on the journey of becoming a great clinician. I loved my time as an intern at Brave Minds, and I’m so grateful for the way it’s shaped me as a therapist!”
Megan Herelle, LAMFT (Former Syracuse MFT Intern)
While looking for internship experiences in order to conclude my counseling program, I can’t stress enough how grateful I was to come across Brave Minds Psychological Services. I can remember initially starting the interviewing process, and first sitting down with Dr. Fawn. Through each step of the process, I was greeted by a team that displayed immense compassion and kindness. I definitely feel like this carried through my entire experience as an intern. From getting the opportunity to build up my own caseload, to doing co-therapy and working with the amazing team of therapists established at the practice, I can say that I truly learned so much from my experience at BMPS. I am so grateful that I was able to have an fieldwork experience such as this, which has definitely informed my journey as a new therapist.
Jayln Giles Ewell (Former Liberty University Art Therapy Intern)
My time at Brave Minds has been one of the most meaningful and transformative experiences of my life- both professionally and personally. I am endlessly grateful to have found Brave Minds, a place where every single member of the team embodies what it truly means to show up for others. Each person is thoughtful, compassionate, and deeply driven by empathy. Quite simply, they are the most wonderful humans!
Internships can feel like an overwhelming and uncertain time, but Fawn, Lisa, and Lauren made every step of this journey feel supported and intentional. Their compassion is immeasurable, and throughout their guidance, I have learned so much about the field of mental health services. They are walking examples of what it means to be a healer- in the truest sense of the word- and I will forever carry every lesson they have so generously shared with me.
Beyond the warmth of this team, I am so grateful for the unique and invaluable trainings that helped me develop real clinical skills, the opportunity to build and grow my own caseload, and the consistent, thoughtful supervision that kept me grounded and growing. Most importantly, Brave Minds gave me something that every emerging professional needs: a safe, welcoming, and encouraging space to grow and learn.
Marissa Aitken (Former Rutgers University 1st year MSW Intern)
Working at Brave Minds has been a truly great experience. Everyone at the practice is super supportive and all genuinely care about what they do and how they do it! Each clinician is working toward something meaningful. I’ve had a lot of chances to grow, try new things, and learn from each of their unique strengths. It’s a really positive, encouraging environment where everyone actually cares about each other and there is genuine warmth! Being surrounded by people who genuinely care about the work and each other makes a big difference and I’m so blessed to have had my internship season at Brave Minds and will absolutely continue to stay connected to this practice both personally and professionally.
Thank you Brave Minds!Kara Drake (Former Liberty University Counseling Intern)
