Grief Counseling

Has Loss and Grief Turned Your World Upside Down?

What Does Grieving Mean? What Is Grieving?

When you wake up, reality hits. The weight on your chest reminds you that it wasn’t a dream, that today will bring all the dark pains of yesterday and the day before that. You don’t know if you can even get out of bed. You long to hide and pretend this isn’t happening.

When you can muster the energy to climb out of bed, you don’t feel like yourself. You might have thoughts like…

People are going to ask how I’m doing, and I don’t know what to say.
What if I start crying? How will I put on a brave face?
Everyone expects me to carry on, but they don’t understand.

When you’re dealing with loss, each day can feel like an eternity. On top of your other responsibilities of going to work, taking care of family, and showing up for the people in your life, the added weight can feel impossible to manage. Every day your heart feels heavier.

You might wish that life could return to the way it was, that if you could just feel normal again, everything would be okay. The well-meaning words from others about fate, finding peace, or staying positive don’t seem to help. If anything, they leave you feeling even more alone.

If your grief is the loss of a pet or animal friend, you may feel particularly alone as many people struggle to relate to the pain of losing a pet.  We see you too.

Grief Is A Process

What is the Grieving Process?

You may be familiar with the stages of grief. Immediately after a loss, you feel shock, fear, panic, or overwhelming sadness.

Once that initial shock begins to life, confusion often settles in. Many people find themselves thinking:

  • How could this happen?
  • Why is this happening to me?
  • I don’t deserve this.

While everyone experiences grief, no two people grieve in the same way. Grief doesn’t move in clean, organized steps. It comes in unpredictable waves. In those waves of grief, you might find yourself:

  • Wishing things would go back to normal
  • Wondering what you could have done differently
  • Questioning your purpose or your future
  • Feeling scared of experiencing another loss
  • Feeling completely lost

Right now, the thought of moving forward may feel impossible:

  • Will I survive this?
  • How will I ever get through this?
  • Can I ever get back to normal?
  • I feel so alone.

If you’ve lost a loved one to death, you may also be carrying the weight of finality. The grief of the unfinished goodbye:

  • How will I ever get closure when I couldn’t say goodbye?
  • I can’t believe I’m never going to see them again.

Loss Takes Many Forms

“If we choose to love, we will grieve.” -David Kessler.

There are Many Events That Can Trigger Grief

We all experience grief but that doesn’t make it any easier to carry. Loss isn’t limited to death. Grief can follow many kinds of experiences, including:

  • Death of a loved one, including sudden loss or loss after a long illness
  • Pregnancy loss and infertility, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and the grief of a path to parenthood that looked different than expected
  • Divorce or relationship ending, including the loss of a future you had imagined
  • Estrangement, including from a parent, child, sibling, or close friend; a loss that often goes unacknowledged
  • Ambiguous grief, such as losing someone to dementia, addiction, or mental illness; grieving a person who is still alive
  • Job loss or career change, including the loss of identity and purpose that can come with it
  • Major life transitions, such as a move, a child leaving home, or a shift in physical health
  • Loss of a pet or animal companion

Some losses are widely recognized and supported. Others, like estrangement, pregnancy loss, ambiguous grief, can feel invisible, as though the world doesn’t quite have language for what you’re going through. We do. And we’re here for all of it.

You Are Not Alone

You are grieving, but you are not alone, and you don’t have to keep your feelings locked inside. While  people around you may not know how to respond, and you might even sense those around you waiting for you to move on, there is hope.

Your experiences aren’t too “depressing” or “heavy” for our therapists. We know that being truly seen and heard is part of healing, so we are ready to sit with you.

Work At Your Own Pace

There is no set timeline for grief. Whether your loss happened last week or ten years ago, therapy can help. Your therapist will follow your lead, allowing the process to unfold in a way that feels safe.

Practical Tools When You’re Ready

When you’re in a place to receive it, your therapist will offer coping strategies tailored to you; not generic advice, but tools that actually fit your life, your values, and your way of moving through the world.

Processing The Grief That Goes Unacknowledged

Whether you’re grieving a person, a relationship, a role, a pregnancy, or a version of your life you expected to have, your experience deserves acknowledgement and care. We hold space for all forms of loss, including the ones that others may not understand.

Finding Pockets Of Hope

Healing doesn’t mean forgetting or “moving on.” It means learning to carry your grief in a way that doesn’t consume you. In time, it also means discovering moments of meaning, connection, and even joy alongside the loss.

There Is No “Right” Way To Grieve

Every loss is unique, and thus, so is every healing process. Your grief therapist will offer approaches that fit your needs, beliefs, and timeline. This is your journey. We are here to walk alongside you and keep you safe throughout it.

You may still have concerns about seeking help…

“Therapy isn’t going to change what I’ve lost. Nothing a therapist says can take away my pain.”

That’s true, and we won’t claim otherwise. Grief therapy won’t erase your pain. But it can help you carry it. We help you grow stronger so the weight becomes more bearable. You already have incredible resilience. Sometimes we all need help finding it again.

“I recently lost my pregnancy.  Everyone seems to think I should just move on.”

Losing a baby at any stage is a devastating experience that is often minimized by those who haven’t lived it. We have compassionate therapists who specialize in  the unique grief of pregnancy loss.  Regardless of the reasons, pregnancy loss is more painful and difficult than most people understand.  This is why it is critical to reach out to get the unique support you need.

“I’m not sure now is the right time.”

There is no perfect time to grieve, and there is no expiration date on the pain of loss. Whether your loss is recent or decades old, therapy can offer meaningful support. You deserve care; not later, but now.

“Are you going to tell me to think positive?”

No. We are going to create space for you to feel what you actually feel. Grief is not a problem to be reframed. It is a natural, human response to love and loss. We’re here to sit with you in it, not rush you out of it.

“How long does the grief process last?”

There is no set timeline for grief, and anyone who tells you there is hasn’t sat with it long enough. Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, and healing isn’t linear. You may feel okay for stretches of time, only to find that a song, a smell, or a date on the calendar brings it all rushing back.

For some people, the sharpest pain begins to soften over months. For others, grief becomes a long-term companion that simply changes shape over time. Both are normal. What matters isn’t how long it takes, but that you have support along the way.
